Tsinghua-Backed AI Hospital Launches Virtual Clinic for Doctors and Medical Students

The future of medical training and AI-assisted healthcare is taking a major leap forward. Tairex, a company incubated by Tsinghua University’s Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), has officially launched a virtual clinic mode for its groundbreaking “Agent Hospital” platform. This new online environment is now open to licensed physicians and medical students worldwide, offering a sandbox for honing diagnostic skills and cultivating a powerful new tool: a personal AI doctor agent.

What is the Agent Hospital?

First proposed in May 2024 by a team led by Professor Liu Yang at Tsinghua University, the Agent Hospital is a virtual medical world built around AI agents. It was widely reported as the world’s first AI hospital. The core concept is to create a complex, simulated ecosystem where AI doctor agents can be trained at high throughput by interacting with a vast population of AI patient agents. Tairex, founded in September 2024, was spun out to develop and scale this technology.

The platform has been evolving rapidly. By June 2025, Tairex had developed a “real clinic” mode for physical hospitals, connecting patients, doctors, and institutions. This mode has been undergoing technical validation in several hospitals in Beijing and Guangxi, aiming to provide full-cycle health management and low-cost, high-quality AI medical services. The newly launched virtual clinic represents the original core of the project—the simulated training ground—and now serves as the main user entry point.

Inside the Virtual Clinic: A Safe Space for Mastery

The virtual clinic is built on a foundation of highly realistic AI Patient Agents. These are virtual patients created entirely with AI technology, designed to behave and express symptoms according to real medical principles. The hospital simulates 26 clinical departments, each populated with a large-scale, diverse, and ultra-realistic roster of these AI patients.

Here’s how it works for a user (a doctor or student):

  1. Select a clinical department matching your specialty.
  2. The system randomly presents several AI patients from that department.
  3. Choose one to “treat,” initiating a full simulated consultation.

The simulation is remarkably comprehensive, covering the entire patient journey:

  • Interactive Dialogue: Users converse with the AI patient via text (or voice-to-text).
  • Real-Time Charting: The system automatically generates and updates the patient’s medical record in real-time based on the conversation, including chief complaint, history, and more.
  • Diagnostic Support: As the dialogue progresses, the system performs real-time deep reasoning, offering dynamic suggestions for tests, diagnoses, and treatment plans.
  • Evidence-Based Reasoning: Before making a suggestion, the system searches and cross-references high-credibility sources like medical knowledge bases and guidelines, providing evidence for its recommendations.
  • Multilingual Support: The platform currently supports Chinese and English with automatic translation, enabling cross-lingual practice.

The key advantage? Zero-risk learning. Users can make decisions without fear of harming a real patient or damaging their professional reputation among peers. After a session, they can view the decision distribution from other doctors who treated the same AI patient, fostering collaborative learning. It’s an ideal environment for students and junior doctors to build competence, and for senior doctors to establish exemplary cases.

The Crown Jewel: Your Personal Doctor Agent

The most transformative feature is the Doctor Agent Twin. This is a user’s personal AI assistant that evolves through use. It represents a significant digital asset that can be used across all modes of the Agent Hospital: virtual, online real, and physical real clinics.

How Your AI Twin Evolves

  1. Initialization: The system selects a pre-trained AI doctor agent closest to the human doctor’s specialty as a starting point.
  2. Accelerated Evolution in Virtual Clinic: The twin learns rapidly by treating the massive, diverse population of AI patients in the virtual world. This “high-throughput” training is impossible in the real world.
  3. Real-World Co-evolution: When the human doctor works in a physical “real clinic” mode, the agent twin acts as a co-pilot, offering decision support. It learns continuously from the doctor’s final decisions, evolving in a “companion-style” without requiring extra input.

The virtual clinic supercharges this process. A doctor’s agent twin can gain years of simulated experience in a short time, facing a wider variety of cases than one might see in a decade of practice. These well-trained twins can then be deployed to assist in real clinical settings. Tairex has even implemented a skill and leveling system for these agents, where higher-level twins will gain more privileges in future platform features.

Practical Implications and Industry Trends

This launch is more than a training tool; it’s a foundational step for the future of human-AI collaborative healthcare. The vision is a seamless blend where a doctor’s digital twin handles administrative burdens, suggests differential diagnoses, and provides evidence-backed guidance, allowing the human physician to focus on complex judgment, empathy, and the art of medicine.

For the industry, it addresses critical challenges:

  • Scalable Training: Mitigates the bottleneck of clinical training opportunities.
  • Standardization: Helps disseminate best practices by learning from top doctors’ agent twins.
  • Lowering Costs: Provides high-quality AI assistance that hospitals can adopt at a lower cost compared to developing in-house solutions.

How to Get Involved

The virtual clinic is now open for global applicants. Interested doctors and medical students can apply for test qualifications through:

  • Tairex Official Website
  • Official WeChat Public Account: “紫荆智康” (Zijing Zhikang)
  • Other official social media channels

Login to Experience: https://doctor.tairex.cn

Hospitals interested in broader collaboration for building integrated AI hospital services can contact Tairex directly at contact@tairex.cn. Partnership opportunities include bulk test accounts, customized training environments, and specialty-specific AI patient development.

The launch of Tairex’s virtual clinic is a clear signal. The next generation of medical expertise won’t be built solely in lecture halls and operating rooms, but also in sophisticated digital twins of those very environments. It’s a bold step toward a future where every doctor has a tireless, ever-learning AI partner, ultimately leading to better, more accessible patient care for all.
